FIRE SAFETY ENGINEERING ASSESSMENT FOR A MULTIFUNCTIONAL STADIUM

A performance based design approach is used to evaluate the fire safety of the “Allianz Cloud”
Stadium, in Milan. The method of Fire Safety Engineering is followed. Computational Fluid
Dynamic simulations are pursued with FDS, to obtain fire and smoke simulations for three
different fire scenarios. The safety of occupants and firefighters is evaluated comparing CFD
results with the Egress simulations pursued with MassMotion, by Oasys. The fire scenarios
are studied in terms of fire characteristic and human behaviour, in order to complete a holistic
fire assessment. The results shows that the time requested for occupants and firefighters to
evacuate, considering margin of safety of 100% (RSET), is less than the time for the
environment to become unsustainable for humans (ASET). Moreover, the investigation
process highlighted critical issues endangering safe evacuation. These considerations are
evaluated in order to address the importance and constitute a tool for the production of a
dynamic fire safety management plan that would adapt to different type of events.
